how does sex work in college when you have a roommate or multiple?

i mean do you just hook up or have sex in your dorm regardless of whether or not your roommate(s) is there? Sorry this might be a stupid question, but im just wondering

noooo don't have sex while your roommate is there! thats a big no-no. sometimes you can warn your roommate when you think you might be having sex, ask them to knock first or not come back during certain hours. something a lot of people here do is put something like a hair elastic on the doorknob as a clue to their roommate not to just barge in.
